Week 5 wrap up

Barn Brawl
After falling behind 14-0 early the Middletown faithful who showed up were in shock and it looked like Colerain was going to run Middletown out of the state. But the Middies battled back and by half time it was 14-13 after Middletown missed a PAT. The second half became a defensive slug fest as neither team scored until Colerain got into the endzone with a couple minutes left to make there lead larger and seal the victory.

Second time not so lucky
St. Xaviers Bomber Nation was going nuts as they had just made an incredible comeback and tied arch rival Moeller 27-27. But thats when the whitles blew and Moeller had taken a timeout before the kick there fore it did not count. St. X kicker Nick Roemers second try was not so good, and The X comback came up short.

Panthers come up short
For a team that has been blown out by two top 10 nationaly ranked teams, Miami Central was like a sigh of relief. After a back and forth game of no team leading by more than 7. Emillio Nadelma put a 39 yard field goal thru the uprights with just 3 seconds left to break the hearts of Elder, who is now in deep trouble of not making the playoffs for the second year in a row.

GWOC shocks!
5 weeks thru the season and first place in the GWOC central is Beavercreek. The north is just as shocking with Butler atop the division with Trotwood and Troy. All three teams are yet to play. As for the usual powers Wayne and Northmont are not sure what has hit them after taking some tough losses and blowouts. Centerville has recovered fine but is still much weaker than and below expectations.

Middletown vs. Colerain GMC showdown

In a game that started with Colerain returning a fumble on Middletowns opening drive. Colerain quickly went up 14-0 after a touchdown on there next drive. Middie nation was in shock and appeared to be in trouble, but Jalin Marshall led Middletown back to a 13-14 game after a botched PAT snap by the Middies. After a scoreless third quarter both teams struggled to move the ball and the clock continued to run with out any score. Until Colerain scored with under 3 minutes left to put the Cardinals up 8. Middletowns following drive ended with a desperation toss getting intercepted and Colerain sealed the deal yet taking the front running in the GMC title race.

Week 4 wrap up

Unstopable?
Is there any team playing better football right now than the Trotwood Rams. Transfer Michael Simpson has been impressive in the passing game, and a Rams defense that has forced turnover after turnover. After the stomping of GWOC foe Wayne, Trotwood looks to be the team to beat in region 8 half way thru the season.

Trinity two peat
For the second week in a row Kentucky power Louisville Trinity defeated a GCL south school. This weeks victim was St. Xavier after beating Elder last week. Trinity has looked impressive in both wins and plays Moeller week 10, which is Cincinnati's last hope of beating the out of state foe.

Get ready for the other GCL
Probably one of the strongest years for the GCL central and north in awhile and maybe even ever. With Fenwick being very strong and Alter trying to reload there dynasty. Teams like Roger Bacon and McNicholas hope to spoil the shows and CJ's impressive 30-14 win over Bacon on friday shows that the once strugling team may have turned it around.

Dayton City League returning to the old days

A conference that produced NFL stars and college football all-americans has fallen off the radar and has been a laugher when there teams show up on schedules. The once highly prestigious league has lost its luster from kids leaving for the suburbs, but in recent years the conference has begun to improve. Currently the teams are a combined 10-5, with Belmont at 3-0 and Thurgood Marshall, Dunbar, and Ponitz are all 2-1. The speed is begining to stay in the city and has seen Thurgood Marshall become an impressive contender in the playoffs. With the fast growing Ponitz Panthers who have improved season by season continues to rise in enrollment numbers. With a Belmont team who has been very undervalued in the 2000's starting 3-0 makes for alot of excitment in Bison country. Although they may never get back to the level the City league once was, seeing the kind of football there playing now show people now adays a glimpse as to what the past was like

Week 3 wrap-up

Week 3 is in the books and conference play for most teams kicks off this week. But not before we summarize week 3.
Streak Over
A streak that started in the late 90's came to an end on friday as St. Xavier stunned Colerain, ending Colerains home win streak. The classic game was overshadowed in the end with Colerain's head coach yelling at the St. Xavier student section at the end of the game. Don't let that story overshadow what was possibly the game of the year.

Steam Rolled
The nightmare season continues for the Northmont Bolts. After there 63-12 loss to Moeller saturday, people in Clayton are worried about what GWOC play has in store for them. While down in Cincinnati, Elder is in shock as they were blown out on friday by Kentucky rival Louisville Trinity. The Panthers shouldn't be to concerned though as Trinity is one of the best in the nation and hopes are still high for a GCL south title, though anytime Elder is beat that bad people take the time to step back and wonder what happened

O Canada
Of the notable teams that played teams north of America, Wayne and Centerville got into the win category with blow out wins. Teams that continue to play Canadian teams, end up losing major playoff points in the end due to Canada's later season.

Going North
The GCL north has been split down the middle, with Fenwick and Alter both starting undefeated. But CJ and Carroll were able to pick up there first victories of the year. All the teams have big confidence going into GCL play and watch out for an exciting race.

Strength of Schedule hurts rather than helps

The Northmont Bolts have picked up a schedule that has been one of the toughest in the state over the past four seasons. Since dropping long time rival Chaminade Julienne after the 2007 season, partly because of CJ's division 3 status. Northmont  has picked up games with Moeller, St. Ignatius, and Colerain. Just to name the powerhouses, Northmonts schedule has slated potential playoff matchups that the Bolts hoped would pay off. But a recent playoff drought has left alot of people wondering if Northmont is in over there head. Since the 2008 season they are only 4-7 in non conference games, and hasn't made it to the playoffs since 2008. Playing in region 4 makes their loses hurt alot more. When you play in the toughest playoff region in not only the state but possibly the nation, 3 or even 2 loses greatly affect playoff chances. Things are not to late for the Bolts though, despite taking on a very good Moeller team this friday the tough copetition will get them ready for a tough GWOC central race. With Centerville and Wayne also at 0-2 noone has taken there front running for who wants to be crowned champion

Trotwood senior QB making the adjustment

Michael Simpson has had staggering numbers the last two seasons at Chaminade Julienne. In the off-season he made the move to Trotwood-Madison, the move has caused for alot of changes and new looks. The last two seasons alot of pressure has been put on Simpson, but he has overcome it,throwing for 26 touchdowns and 3123 yards over his two years of varsity at CJ. The move to Trotwood has been a load of adjusments, the hardest has been "(learning) The new offense and the coaching staff" Simpson said. With all moves though come new expectations and excitment, Simpson told us "just playing with the new team, against really good competition and being successful" was what he is excited about for this season. Simpson and the Trotwood Rams will open up there season friday, versus Thurgood Marshall.

Middletown's Marshall looks to continue where he left off last season

Jalin Marshall fakes the hand off on a run. Photo by Katie Burtis.
One of the biggest suprises of last year was Middletown getting the top seed in region 4. Middletown went 10-0 in the regular season but was upset by Wayne in the first round of the playoffs. Middletown will get there shot at redemption versus Wayne, saturday at Welcome Stadium. In order for the Middies to beat Wayne junior quarterback Jalin Marshall will need to be on. Last year versus Wayne, Marshall was held to 21 rushing yards and two fumbles, his worst performance of the year. Though the playoff performance was not what the rest of his season was like. He rushed for over 1400 yards and 17 touchdowns and threw another 12, including a game where he rushed for 308 yards. Middletown faces a much tougher schedule this year facing Winton Woods, Colerain, Wayne, and Troy. These challenges should build Marshall and the Middies into a true playoff team and hope for a deeper run than last years one and done.

Chaminade Julienne Eagles- 2011 Season Preview

It was a disapointing 4-6 season for CJ last year. But the 4-6 could have easily been 9-1 with a few bounces of the ball. They lost five games by a total of 20 points and held 6 of there 10 opponents to 10 or less points. The season wasn't a total bust though, CJ defeated arch rival and 2 time defending state champion Alter in week 10. A massive upset that noone expected, it handed Alter there first GCL loss since 2005. The win over Alter should give the Eagles extra motivation in the off-season and with new coach, Marcus Colvin, in office the Eagles expectations should be rather high. They lost starting QB Michael Simpson to Trotwood, but do return multiple postions which should be an advantage of the Eagles using such a young team last year.

Fenwick Falcons- 2011 Season Preview

For the second year in a row Fenwick got off to a very hot start, starting off 7-0 and playing very impressive. But also for the second year in a row the Falcons collapsed losing there last three games. They did lose some key running backs in the off season but return a strong defense and heavily recruited QB Austin Gearing also returns. Fenwick will be an early favorite to win region 16 this year, aslong as history doesnt repeat itself, they have a very good chance of doing that.

Carroll Patriots- 2011 Season Preview

The Carroll Patriots are entering 2011 off a divison 2 playoff birth. Despite losing head coach Steve Bartlett in the offseason. The Patriots should still be strong on the defensive side of the ball. They will also get back senior running back Todd Richardson who had 5 touchdowns on 447 rushing yards last year. If they can figure out the right fits for offense Carroll should be a front runner for the GCL north in 2011.

Alter Knights- 2011 Season Preview

Not a better school to start off with than the defending GCL north champions. The Alter Knights. They lost multiple games in a season for the first time since the 2005 season. The state powerhouse that has built a dynasty in the past four years still has some bright paths ahead. The team who for the first time in a few years was challenged to the final whitsle in multiple games. Alter gets back a young QB, Malik Zaire and backs, Joe Penno and Jackson Vandergriff. The Knights will not play a return game with Centerville this year, and instead will play Napoleon along with backyard rival Fairmont and East Tech from Cleveland.

Purcell Marian- 2011 Season Preview

Our final GCL central team is the Purcell Marian Cavaliers. Despite the 1-9 record in 2010, the Cavs had one of the youngest teams aswell as the smallest roster. They will get back E.J. Burnett who rushed for 1013 yards with 8 touchdowns. They will also get back there starting QB, Chris Korthaus, who threw for a small 380 yards and 3 tds, but only on 114 attempts. Purcells non conference opponents are Walnut Hills, Norwood, who they beat last year, and Reading.

Badin Rams- 2011 Season Preview

Going 5-5 last season was good enough for the Badin Rams to get into the playoffs. They defeated Richmond North Union in the first round but lost to Coldwater in round two, and they worked hard to get there. Four of there games were decided by one point, and two games went into overtime. Badin took a big hit in week one last year when the Cincinnati bound QB Patrick Coyne was injured and missed most of the season. But back up senior Jeff Smith really stepped up at the position, he threw for 1429 yards and 12 touchdowns, including the postseason. He rushed for another 980 yards with 13 touchdowns. Badin loses alot on offense but does get back Max Adams who had 4 tocuhdowns and 171 recieving yards. Badin does return there leading sacker Casey Schappacher and there interception leader Luke Wurzelbacher. Badin opens the season with Woodward, then Taft and Edegewood.

McNicholas Rockets- 2011 Season Preview

Today's preview is for the 2010 Region 12 winner, the McNicholas Rockets. The Rockets were one of the surprising teams in the state. Lead by 6'5" quaterback, Matt Staubach who is headed to Cincinnati as a tight end. Staubach threw for only 9 touchdowns while rushing for 22, he also lead the team in rushing with 1196 yards. The Rockets do get back there third leading rusher,Dillion Stanfield. He rushed for 402 yards and 4 touchdowns. Interception leader Max Harmon is also back. After finishing 11-3 with losses to Fenwick, Alter, and Bishop Waterson. The Rockets will open the season at Newport Catholic, New Richmond and Turpin, then off to GCL league play

2011 season preview-ROGER BACON

2010 Recap- 7-3, lost in the second round of the playoffs to McNicholas

Roger Bacon had a season not alot of people outside of the school expected, they went 7-3 and made it to the second round of the divison III playoffs before being ousted by GCL central foe McNicholas. Bacon loses QB Tanner Sprong who threw for 1700 yards and 19 touchdowns last year, aswell as the key recievers. But the Spartans do regain there leading rusher,Griffin Mouty who rushed for over 1000 yards and 11 touchdowns. They also took a huge hit on defense losing team sack leader Innocent Macha and interception leader Brian Bein. They however dropped to divison 4 which should make gaining playoff points a little easier. The Spartans will open up the season with Mt. Healthy, then will play North College Hill who went 10-0 last year and will open up league with Chaminade Julienne who they defeated last year in an incredible 44-41 shoot out.
